For the third instalment of our rotating showcase at W2 we exhibited ‘Pont des Modeleurs’ by artist Alex Burch.
The work is part of the larger series ‘Ligne 125’- an on going documentation of Europe. The project is a collection of observations along the main railway line connecting two major cities in the Wallonia Region of Belgium, starting in Liege and ending in the provincial capital of Namur. Focusing on the topographical changes around the post industrial Landscape of the Wallonia region, the work centres on an area that has seen major changes to its social and economic infrastructure.
Burch is drawn to the encroachment of industry upon the every day, viewing mounds and towers in a monumental sense, with their large scale and undercurrents of a physical estimation of human effort. They are the remains of objects and a mentality of a different time, one that is now shifting away from Europe.
‘Pont des Modeleurs’ was on display throughout February and March 2018.
